How to Stand Out in 9 Seconds

As we countdown to the 2017 Leadership Conference on May 10th at Tampa Convention Center, we’re pleased to share another guest blog post from our Keynote Speaker, fascination researcher and expert Sally Hogshead.

You only have 9-seconds to make a meaningful first impression in-person or on the phone. How much time do you have in the virtual world to make your introduction?

Your Personal Brand is your key to standing out in 9 seconds.

Personal brand statements are something easily communicated in-person, but unfortunately unless you can get everyone in a room to “woo” them, you need your online presence to speak for you.

Even before you meet, chances are everyone that you come into contact with has googled you.

Your personal branding is out there for all to see... The good, the bad and the downright embarrassing...

How can you make your online personal brand persuade and influence?

This is where your Anthem comes into play.

You may have heard them called personal brand statement, but we like to call them Anthems. In only two or three words, your Anthem describes how you are different, and what you do best. It’s simple to remember, easy to communicate, and instantly illustrates how you add distinct value.

Think of it as a “tagline” for your personality. Your Anthem is your personal brand statement.

If your personal brand fails to fascinate, you fail.

If you haven’t created your Anthem yet, don’t worry. We’re here to help. 

Team NLC has an active learning culture, so we’re not content just to share Sally’s excellent content; we’ve been digging in deep ourselves.

For instance, we’ve all taken the Fascination Advantage assessment and discovered that our team is composed of five different Personality Archetypes:

  • Our CEO Emily is the Avant Garde. Her advantages are Prestige and Innovation.
  • Director of Strategic Solutions Tuesdi Dyer is the Connoisseur; with advantages Prestige and Passion.
  • Education Associate Laurel Westmoreland in our Rockstar; her advantages are Innovation and Passion.
  • Operations Manager Lorraine Faithful is the Good Citizen, with advantages Trust and Alert.
  • Director of Education and Communications Jen Dodd is the Intrigue. Her advantages are Passion and Mystique.

Our next stop was creating our own brand anthems, which Sally describes like this:

So at our planning retreat, we spent some time on group and solo brainstorming, and then each presented our brand anthem to the team. We found that completing this sentence suggest by Sally helped us narrow our focus:

I am the ideal person for this opportunity because I deliver [insert your Anthem here].

  • Emily delivers Creative Results.
  • Tuesdi brings Unconventional Insight.
  • Laurel contributes Unfettered Idealism.
  • Lorraine generates Reliable Information.
  • Jen fosters Insightful Innovation.
